Purpose
The purpose of the Cazenovia Race Program is to develop technique, skills, and a lifetime love of skiing through training and competition. For the 2008/2009 season we will have two teams:
Competition Ski Team: This is the traditional race team that practices three days a week and travels for weekend races. The format is geared towards those with a keen interest towards practicing and competing.
Recreation Ski Team: This program is geared toward those who love to "run gates", but don't want to make the commitment required to be on the Comp Team. Unlike the traditional Gatebuster Program, there is no implied age limit to this team. Any junior who wants to dramatically improve their skiing and go fast is encouraged to enroll.
Coaches
We are lucky to have Annie Lapham returning as our head coach. She brings both experience and continuity to the program. Assisting for this year will be Daly Harris. Daly will be leading the weeknight practices and the Rec Team on Saturday. Daly is also in charge of ensuring that every junior has fun! Rich Lapham will also be returning in his role making sure everything is running smoothly. We have also provided a greater support structure so that the coaches can concentrate on skill development.
Schedule
Training will start as soon as the Club can open and will continue through the normal six-race season. The normal schedule is as follows:
Comp Team - Practice Tuesday and Thursday night and Saturday morning, attend regional races on Sunday.
Rec Team - Practice Thursday night and Saturday morning, attend the Caz Dual Slalom.
Both teams are eligible to participate in pre-season dry-land training, a planned three-day holiday training camp and informal Sunday Caz races.
Enrollment
Enrollment forms can be obtained from the website (here) or from any of the individuals listed below. Sign up now to ensure a spot on the team of your choice.

NYSSRA
Rules
Please read the NYSSRA handbook rules for details, but also
note the following items.
- A completed NYSSRA card
must be submitted one week in advance of each race.
If you are late, you can be dropped to the end of the running
order for both runs or not allowed to race.
- Send cards and registration
fee to the race secretary.
- You can use either the old
white cards or the new blue cards.
The blue cards were laid out to allow photocopying your USSA
card in the shaded area. If
you photocopy, use card stock and cut to the appropriate size.
Paper registrations are harder to handle and have been lost.
- If you are a Level III racing
as a level IV, circle the Level III and write “Special”
across the face of the card in highlighter or similar.
- If you haven’t received
your USSA card, write “Pending” in the USSA # box.
- YOU
MUST BRING your USSA & NYSSRA cards to races.
Some hills may use your cards as a bib deposit.
If you don’t have your cards, a $10 deposit may be required.
Race Day
The typical
race day format is as follows:
- Arrive at the hill approximately
1½ hours before race (be sure to GET TO RACES EARLY).
- Find registration table
to sign-in and get bib.
- Locate rest of team and
Coach to inspect course as a group.
- Depending on time, racers
with low starting numbers then return to the start.
Others can free ski and watch race.
Most races start with one racer on-course and jump to two on-course
after the first five or ten racers.
Racers must stay tuned-in to the coach and race sequence.
- The 2nd run follows
an hour or two after the end of the 1st
(it varies depending on hill and success in running 1st
run). The course is reset,
so another inspection is needed.
All racers need to meet with the coach 30 to 45 minutes before
the 2nd run.
- Remember that the race order
reverses - if your racer was last to start in the 1st run,
he/she will be first in the 2nd run. (there isn’t much
time for lunch).
- The 2nd run will
finish mid-afternoon and is followed by a hospitality hour and awards
ceremony. Timing varies,
so everyone must stay tuned in.
Council
Events
The Council directory will be published soon and it will
contain the official race schedule.
