Greek Peak
January 25, 2004 It's unclear why anyone would associate a downhill ski area with the Greeks. The Greeks were well removed from downhill ski racing. Not once did the mighty Hercules have to carve his way down blue boilerplate on a tight slalom course set on the north side of Mount Olympus. Nowhere in Homer's Odyssey did the brave Odysseus get stuck in a snow bank on his 20-year journey home after a long day of skiing. No calamity released by Pandora from her infamous box even references a total yard sale on a double black diamond trail. No the Greek culture is not well endowed with skiing lore and legend. Not so the Norse. Norse mythology is replete with skiing references. The Norse even had a goddess of skiing and snowshoeing named Skadi. The Norse understood skiing so well, that when Skadi had to choose her husband all she was allowed to see of the prospective candidates were their feet. Not surprisingly the resulting marriage was an unhappy one and this caused her to Saab. But anyone who has had ski boots on for any length of time and has been married for any length of time will understand the obvious symbolism. Even so, somehow, we didn't end up with Paulsen's Peak. No we have a ski area named Greek Peak and that is where the second week of downhill ski racing found the Cazenovia Competition Ski Club. The results for our small team were again way out of proportion for the number of kids on the hill. In the J5 Female division Kaitlyn Button, the Tiny Tiger of Perryville, turned in her second consecutive fourth place finish. When asked about this stunning accomplishment and her two year string of top ten finishes Kaitlyn replied, "yeah like whatever". Also skiing strongly for the second consecutive week was Alex Verbeck. Coach Button commented that Alex is skiing strongly, in good form, and is right where she is expected to be at this early point in the season. Over in the J5 Male division Barclay, Bode Miller, Talbot came away with an eighth place finish. This was his second consecutive week in the top ten. Barclay was unavailable for comment. James, Shaken Not Stirred, Smith skied well and moved up several notches in standings. His brother Nate was only able to ski one run in the J4 race before being privately jetted off to a prior concert engagement. It was a tough day for the Concilla boys. Sam I am was unfortunately disqualified in his first run while Bennie Hana was disqualified in his second run. Coach Lapham was far from disappointed, "Both Sam and Ben are racing well. Things like this will happen when you're skiing aggressively and pushing the envelope. Watch out for these two!" Our young racers head to Labrador Mountain this week. When you see them, wish them well and congratulate them on representing our club so well. |
