73 years of family skiing on the best hill in Central NY

December, 2009

Dear Cazenovia Ski Club Member;

Can you believe that it has already been 9 months since we watched the last of the giant mounds of manmade snow melt, and spring skied in the mud? Well it is that time of year again, SKI SEASON!! 2010 marks the Cazenovia Ski Club’s, 73rd year of incredible skiing!!

Try to imagine what skiing was like in 1937: Ungroomed deep powder, wooden skis, encouraging your kids to try a new and exciting sport, great camaraderie with fellow skiers, no running water, nips from a flask to keep you warm, wool clothes, hike the steeps, ski the trees….wait a minute, who says skiing has changed a lot over the years!!  On to business!

The club has been busy with many improvement projects to benefit its members. These improvements include:

·         Newly decorated and furnished A-frame complete with , new picnic tables, antique benches, fresh  paint, working fireplace and a "State of the Art, Green Compliant" infrared heating system.

·         Electronic bill paying via the "SkiCaz.com" website

·         Two refurbished T-bar towers for improved reliability and less down time

·         Purchase of a newer snowmobile, designed specifically for our terrain

·         6 new snow gun towers for improved man-made snow coverage of the hill

·         1 rebuilt and installed snow making pump with 100 hp motor to allow for redundant snow making capabilities

·         Updated hill lighting fixtures for Vicki's with additional units to be installed this Fall

·         Freshly cleared roadside views of the entire club from Rathbun Rd.

·         2 new Ski Patrollers on the hill this year: Alexis Ellis and Scott Falso

·         Expert self-maintenance of our Snow Cat Fleet

·         New Social Committee- Deck Party Sign Up’s have begun! Be a Host, call Liz Cobb!

If that is not enough, the Cazenovia Ski Club, and the Two Smiles, One Hope Foundation hosted Mountain Jam III on a beautiful fall day in September. This event provided tremendous publicity to the club with radio and newspaper exposure, 2000 hits to the Ski Club website, 800 in attendance with “Free Ski Day” ticket stubs, 7 new memberships, and $4000 in revenue to the club. In addition, Two Smiles, One Hope had another successful fundraiser, with everyone in attendance having a fantastic time listening to great live music and enjoying family friendly activities.

DUES

Your membership passes for the 2009-2010 season, as well as five guest passes, are available via the Ski Club website.  Once your dues are paid in full, you will be able to print your passes from your home.

Please use last year’s badge holder for your passes.  Replacement badge holders will be available for $7.00.  If you need a replacement, please let a board member know.  Another great display method is to tape your membership pass to your helmet.

We are still a great value, offering passes between 20-30% less than other local area’s with no lines, better terrain, and friendly atmosphere. Here is the dues structure for 2009-2010.

We have several new families at the Club this year.  If you see a new face, please take some time to introduce yourself and welcome these new families to the Club.  Keep up the great marketing efforts – each new family you bring to the Club will provide you with a 20% discount for your 2010-2011 dues.

VOLUNTEERING

We would like thank everyone who participated in the spring or fall work parties. The slopes are in great shape. If you were unable to participate, perhaps there is a deck party you would like to host, or other volunteer efforts that you can make throughout the ski season.  Volunteering can take on many forms. Some like to participate in outdoor activities and hill maintenance, some prefer inside projects , some enroll in Ski Patrol or teaching lessons, some host deck parties and clam bakes, others assist with snow making and lift operations, and some provide donations. The key is to find something that you like and can give back, and most of all to participate.

Please remember it is your club. We have minimal staff, and we provide the best skiing in Central New York, only through the hard work of its members.

HOURS

The Club hours for the season will be as follows:

Tuesday                                               6 pm to 8 pm (at the discretion of the race team)

Thursday                                             6 pm to 8 pm (at the discretion of the race team)

Saturday & Sunday                         9 am to 4 pm

As always, we will be open for extended hours during school holidays and are looking for volunteers over Holiday weeks. We will also be offering an Open/Close the Club class for those who are interested.

Please remember to always call the recording to confirm operating days and times (655-8368).

RICKS

Last year under the guidance of Rick Konvicka, The Ski Club Lesson Squad was able to advance a dozen kids from ages 4-14, from pizza slicers, to top to bottom skiers! For a small fee, The Ski Club is offering ski lessons on Saturday mornings. This is a tremendous value and will truly advance your beginners from the “bunny slope” to the “big slope”. The program will run 4 sessions on Saturday Mornings, in January/February. Please sign up by calling Rick at 632-4552 or cazskiambassador@gmail.com.  Rick is also looking for volunteer instructors.

One of the greatest traditions at Cazenovia Ski Club is the storied history of the Competition Race Team. This program has produced Olympic Skiers and Regional Champions throughout the years. This year we are looking forward to getting kids excited about racing, learn racing techniques and advanced skiing in a structured environment. This group meets Tuesday and Thursday nights and Saturday mornings. Races are Sundays.  If you are interested in the Cazenovia Competition Ski Team, please sign up using the enclosed form or contact Rick Cote 263-5250 or rcote@buffalo.nef.com, as soon as possible.

Ski you on the slopes!

Last year we were open 45 days, let’s top that this year!

Sincerely,
